But while we’re used to seeing vastly different takes on the iconic plumber thanks to licensees like microsoft and Nintendo, there are still a few developers out there looking to push the limits of what can be done with the Super Mario formula. Enter Kiz10 Studios, a new independent developer based in Poland that has just released its debut title, The SuperFriday Night Squid Challenge. You might recognize it from its appearance as one of the unlockable characters in Shiness: Lightning Returns. In this stripped-down yet intense take on the beloved character, you play as an upstanding citizen who works at a local night club during Super Mario Day — a public holiday that celebrates the life and work of our favorite plumber. After performing an outstanding job serving customers on their Special Days (such as his own birthday), he finds himself targeted by evil goons who want to shut down his night club. To save his job and prove himself to his bosses, he must complete several challenging mini-games inside a ring made up of various levels inspired by classic Super Mario Bros. levels. Sounds simple? Think again.
